Armoured wehicles.

I felt this place was lacking a topic about armoured wehicles/tanks and their tactics.

Some basic facts.

Armoured warfare has developed and changed by time. In the end of the first worldwar the tanks role was mainly as a infantry support wehicle. At the start of the secound worldwar many countries remained in this doctrine. The German blitzkrieg ( lightening war) was developed by heinz guderian just before the ww2 ( worldwar 2) First tried out at the civil war in spain. The philosophy is to mass and concentrate tanks in a small area, providing for a breakthrought. The panzers will then continue throught the frontline and into the 2,nd line and suply units. It also includes combined arm,s tactics, the use of dive bombers on bunkers and strongpoints. At the end of the worldwar tanks gained in size and the use of tank hunters became used by all nations. After the German capitulation the soviets presented the josif stalin 3 tank at a parade in Berlin. A new arms race developed between western nations and the soviet state. Tank hunters became obsolete due to the request of speed, fire on the move, and the development of better ammunitions. From the 1950,s towards the end of the 60,s the tank was king of the hill. The western nations counted the soviet tank treath by developing anti tank weapons far better then the existing bazooka. TOW and other anti tank missiles was developed, so was the combat helicopter and better striker aircrafts. There is much more to this but i try to be brief. The role of the tank changed from king to prey and new systems developed, revolving mobile anti air, and surface to air missile systems. At present moment the western nations all has their own mbt ( main battle tank) and the treath of former soviet built tanks are removed. What is the role of the modern tank? A armoured spearhead? infantry support? Both? Will it be replaced? What is the future for this weapon?

Guerilla Tactics: OPEN DISCUSSION

We have all read Sun Tsu so lets use that as a basic foundation for discussion.

Here are some excerpts to go from:

"When in difficult country, do not encamp. In country where high roads intersect, join hands with your allies. Do not linger in dangerously isolated positions."

"When the common soldiers are too strong and their officers too weak, the result is INSUBORDINATION."

(add quotes as they apply)

Article on Somalia

In case you are unaware of what has been happening in Somalia, here is a brief recap:

Somalia has been without a government for about a decade after US forces tried to restore order to the country. The US was forced out by warlords and eventually gave up on the effort. Warlords have dominated the country for most of the time between then and now. In the last year, a group known as the Islamic Courts had stepped in and restored a government of sorts.

Ethiopia saw the development of the Islamic Courts as a dangerous entity in the region and recently routed the Islamic Courts.

Here is an opinion piece based on the recent events:

China destroys satellite with missile

US satellites kick all kinds of ass!
Except now we realize they might be kind of fucked if we ever going to war with a real military power.
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/23003.html
http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/sto...1996689,00.html
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6289519.stm

China launched a medium range missile at one of their low orbit satalites and blew it up earlier this month.

That means that our military guys are now saying, "Fuck!"

So, lets take a brief survey of the kinds of things that we use satatllites for:

Astronomy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_satellite
Communications - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_satellite
Navigation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navigation_satellite
Reconnaissance - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reconnaissance_satellite
Earth Observation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_...ation_satellite
Space Stations - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_station
Weather - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_satellite

So yeah...if your phone ever quits working, your water supply is acting messed up and nothing is coming in on your television, chances are that we are at war with China.

Probable Nature of Future Weapons Technology

-
This is based on a short essay I did back around 2000. Its points are still valid.
-

<b>What Will Weapons Technology Be Like ...</b>

<b>... 100 Years From Now?</ib>

A combination of:

<b>1)</b> Personal body armor designed to keep you alive and unhurt in the "heavy damage" zone of a nuclear explosion, and containing sealed life support capability. Probably with strength augmentation.

<b>2)</b> A direct-fire weapon capable of firing *through* moderate terrain obstacles, such as trees and small boulders, and at least having enough energy to damage. Probably a high-frequency laser or magnetic gun.

<b>3)</b> An onboard computer, neurolinked to the operator, and enabling him to control a variety of semi-autonomous drone weapons systems, which would be used to deliver:

<b>4)</b> Indirect fire in which the missiles would actively seek out targets, and could be launched in a "loiter" mode and recovered if they did not find worthwhile target. Warheads would be up to tactical nuclear firepower.

<b>5)</b> Partially because of (4), the inidividual soldier would have interception weapons (small lasers or machine pistol caliber firearms) mounted *on* his armor as point defense systems, but still:

<b>6)</b> Anything which you see you can usually kill. So the soldiers would use networks of drone sensors, datalinked to their onboard computers, to enable them to see the enemy without being seen. Still:

<b>7)</b> Mobility would be vital. So the soldiers would probably also have some sort of personal transport system; perhaps an ATV bike, or an aerodyne flight pack. All movement would be under cover of terrain where possible; if by flight, the onboard computer would enable high-speed terrain following. Additionally:

<b>8)</b> AFV's would still exist, but would fight at over-the horizon ranges. They would range from small armored utility vehicles to massive Bolo-like "land battleships", and would in all cases carry significant anti-projectile defensive weapons. Some of these would be point defense, some area defense. Their main armament would be "brilliant" missiles and recon drones, similar to but more capable and longer ranged than the types the infantry would carry.

<b>9)</b> Aircraft would either be very high-performance terrain-following gound attack types, or very high altitude (probably orbital) fighter types.

I think you can see from this, by the way, why I don't think we'd stand a chance against an *intelligently planned* interstellar invasion!

<b>... 200 Years From Now?</b>

<b>1)</b> Personal infantry arms would be able to shoot through heavy terrain cover (large rock formations). The brilliant missiles and drones would be capable of ranging anywhere within thousands of miles.

<b>2)</b> AFV's would be mostly gigantic and triphibious (able to fly or submerge). A single such vehicle, unopposed, could dominate a continent.

<b>3)</b> Soldiers would not fight in their own organic bodies, but rather download edited copies of themselves to command the war machines.

<b>... 500 Years From Now?</b>

Surface and space combat merge, as do infantry and armor. Combat is between "vessels" capable of air, space, land, and water mobility. A single such vessel can dominate a whole planet with ease. The "people" who do the fighting (and for that matter form the society) are vast Personalities of what we would consider superhuman intellect and emotional scope; if they use organic bodies, they would do so purely as "devices" (in the computer jargon sense) ... and that sort of "device" would be poorly suited to combat in this era!

<b>END</b>

North Korea battle plan?

They have no intentions of "winning" a war. Their ace in the hole is in the fact that they can lay such dramatic amount of carnage in a short amount of time, that there is no way of justifying the high amount of human suffering and loss of life over diplomacy.

Think about this, in the most fragile sense, once the seal of war is breached with North Korea, you can expect 1.5 million people to die in the first half hour of military conflict.

Japan would be facing a major economic halt after the destruction of a number of their population and economic centers.

S.Korea would have its major metropolitan and rural population centers, basicly its entire infrastructure, decimated.

NK have that capability already.

That is why the US and it's allies have yet to ever win computer simulated battles with NK. The US does not have anything but a deterent policy, not a comprehensive military strategy with any assurances of averting massive casulaties by our allies.

One more thing, much of the NK military is spread about the country, there for, there are no discriminate targets that could justify the nuclear weapons. The destructive fall out and radiation from one of our nuclear weapons would wreak havok on the neighbors of the Koreas.

Their bunker systems are far more elaborate than anything we saw in Vietnam, Iraq or the mountains of Tora Bora. Bombing campaigns would not be sufficient in halting NK agression. With a large stockpile of missiles, they are definitly going to be difficult to fight.

NORTH KOREAN MISSILES

SHORT-RANGE MISSILES

North Korea has a variety of short-range missiles. The KN-02 is thought to be the most accurate, but its range - around 100km - is the shortest.

The Scud-B and C have ranges of 300 and 500km respectively, while the Scud-D is believed to have a range of 700km. It is thought that these missiles could deliver conventional warheads.

The Scud-B, C and D have all been tested and deployed. These missiles would enable North Korea to strike any area in South Korea.

The KN-02 missile, currently in the testing stage, could be aimed at key targets in South Korea such as military installations south of the border.

NODONG MISSILE

The Nodong missile is thought to have a range of around 1, 000km and could potentially carry a nuclear warhead.

But it is not accurate. A report by the US Center for Non-proliferation Studies said it had a circular error probable of 2-4km, meaning that half of the missiles fired would fall outside a circle of that radius.

The Nodong could strike most of Japan but not with any accuracy. If it were fired on a military target, its inaccuracy could lead to high levels of civilian casualties.

The missile was test fired in May 1993.

TAEPODONG-1 MISSILE

The Taepodong-1 is a two-stage missile comprising Nodong and Scud parts and can reach a distance of 2, 200km, but it is said to be even less accurate than the Nodong.

North Korea tested a Taepodong-1 in August 1998, firing a missile over northern Japan.

It brings US bases on Okinawa within North Korea's reach.

But the missile must be fired from a fixed location and has a long preparation time, meaning that potential launches could be detected.

A land-based missile, the Taepodong-X, is also said to be under development but has not yet been tested.

Based on a Soviet submarine-launched ballistic missile, it is thought to have a range of up to 4, 000km, reaching US bases on Guam. Unlike the Taepodong-1, it could be fired from mobile launch systems hidden from view.

TAEPODONG-2 MISSILE

The Taepodong-2 long-range missile is estimated to have a range of between 5, 000 and 6, 000km, putting Alaska, Hawaii and parts of the west coast of the US within range.

But the first launch of the missile, in July 2006, appeared to be a failure after it crashed within seconds of launch - according to US sources.

If the missile was successfully launched, it is not thought to be particularly accurate or to be able to carry a large warhead. Like the Taepodong-1, it requires a fixed launch site.

The Taepodong-2 test took place from the Musudan-ri complex on the East coast of the Korean peninsula. Analysis of satellite images of the area appear to show a range of missile fabrication, fuelling, testing and control facilities.

So what are your suggestions to minimize the casualty rate in terms of military conflict between the US and NK?

If the lights went out tomorrow, would we freeze in the dark?

This is a saying that I grew up with but the actual saying is “If the lights went out tomorrow, he would freeze in the dark.” And I think it applies to today’s (and future) equipment on the battlefield.

The equipment is getting very sophisticated with advent of the computer chip with the US being the leader sophisticated weapons and equipment. The list is endless, Guided bombs, infrared sensors, night scopes, battlefield computers that relay positions to one another, cameras on soldier’s helmets, etc etc. All powered by electricity and the computer chip. If the computer hangs up and has to reboot, or the battery dies or whatever in the heat of battle, can the soldiers keep going without losing a bunch of guys? This is a temporary loss of technology. What happens if it was permanent loss brought on by the enemy? I know there are back up systems and such and soldiers train for such event like a temporary loss, but could soldiers fight and defend for a week with their gadgets. IMO, it takes a different train of thought to do something without a computer. Can our soldiers switch to a new line of thought on the instant?

I know we would recover but how long would it take, I guess is my real question.

Technology has always had its place in war since the first rock was thrown but is it getting too sophisticated? That is my second question.

Fighting religous fanatics in the middle east.

I'm thinking the whole prison abuse thing is a joke considering we didn't chop off any heads or drag body parts behind a vehicle.

Maybe there would be less violence if they knew our guys could actually strike back.

Looking at the past history of war against armies fueled by religion, there are two gentlemen that come to mind that dealt effectively with the fanatics. 1 - Vlad Tepes, 2- Genghis Khan.

Vlad impaled people and it turned the army coming into his country around.

Genghis Khan poured molten silver into the eyes and ears of the sultan that had his diplomatic envoys murdered. It sent a clear message.

I know for a fact that the British were feared in India and Pakistan because they polished their shell casings with pig fat... and the fanatics were afraid of having their bodies defiled if they were shot.

It's probably a bit brutal, but hey, isn't that what war is really about? when the rules break down?

- Sorry just got done watching Kill Bill... >:-)

When did WW III start???? try around 1979... read on

A must read historical account of Terrorism against the US ~

This is not very long, but very informative. You have to read the catalogue
of events in this brief piece. Then, ask yourself how anyone can take the
position that all we have to do is bring our troops home from Iraq, sit
back, reset the snooze alarm, go back to sleep, and no one will ever bother
us again. In case you missed it, World War III began in November 1979...
That alarm has been ringing for years.

US Navy Captain Ouimette is the Executive Officer at Naval Air Station,
Pensacola, Florida. Here is a copy of the speech he gave last month. It is
an accurate account of why we are in so much trouble today and why this
action is so necessary.

AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP!

That's what we think we heard on the 11th of September 2001 (When more than
3,000 Americans were killed -AD) and maybe it was, but I think it should
have been "Get Out of Bed!" In fact, I think the alarm clock has been
buzzing since 1979 and we have continued to hit the snooze button and roll
over for a few more minutes of peaceful sleep since then.

It was a cool fall day in November 1979 in a country going through a
religious and political upheaval when a group of Iranian students attacked
and seized the American Embassy in Tehran. This seizure was an outright
attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world's most
powerful country hostage and paralyzed a Presidency. The attack on this
sovereign U. S. embassy set the stage for events to follow for the next 25
years.

America was still reeling from the aftermath of the Vietnam experience and
had a serious threat from the Soviet Union when then President Carter had
to do something. He chose to conduct a clandestine raid in the desert. The
ill-fated mission ended in ruin, but stood as a symbol of America's
inability to deal with terrorism.

America's military had been decimated and down sized/right sized since the
end of the Vietnam War. A poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly
organized military was called on to execute a complex mission that was
doomed from the start.

Shortly after the Tehran experience, Americans began to be kidnapped and
killed throughout the Middle East. America could do little to protect her
citizens living and working abroad. The attacks against US soil continued.

In April of 1983, a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven
into the US Embassy compound in Beirut. When it explodes, it kills 63
people. The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once
more.

Then, just six short months later in 1983, a large truck heavily laden down
with over 2500 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine
Corps headquarters in Beirut, and 241 US servicemen are killed. America
mourned her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more.

Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is
driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait, and America continues her slumber.

The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gate
of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.

Soon the terrorism spreads to Europe. In April 1985 a bomb explodes in a
restaurant frequented by US soldiers in Madrid.

Then, in August 1985, a Volkswagen loaded with explosives is driven into
the main gate of the US Air Force Base at Rhein-Main. 22 are killed and the
snooze alarm is buzzing louder and louder as US interests are continually
attacked.

Fifty-nine days later in 1985 a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro, is hijacked
and we watched as an American in a wheelchair is singled out of the
passenger list and executed.

The terrorists then shift their tactics to bombing civilian airliners when
they bomb TWA Flight 840 in April of 1986 that killed 4, and the most
tragic bombing, Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988, killing
259.

Clinton treated these terrorist acts as crimes; in fact we are still trying
to bring these people to trial. These are acts of war.

The wake up alarm is getting louder and louder.

The terrorists decide to bring the fight to America. In January 1993, two
CIA agents are shot and killed as they enter CIA headquarters in Langley,
Virginia.

The following month, February 1993, a group of terrorists are arrested
after a rented van packed with explosives is driven into the underground
parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City. Six people are
killed and over 1000 are injured. Still, this is a crime and not an act of
war. The Snooze alarm is depressed again.

Then, in November 1995, a car bomb explodes at a US military complex in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia killing seven service men and women.

A few months later, in June of 1996, another truck bomb explodes only 35
yards from the US military compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It destroys
the Khobar Towers, a US Air Force barracks, killing 19 and injuring over
500. The terrorists are getting braver and smarter as they see that America
does not respond decisively.

They move to coordinate their attacks in a simultaneous attack on two US
embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.. These attacks were planned with
precision. They kill 224. America responds with cruise missile attacks and
goes back to sleep.

The USS Cole was docked in the port of Aden, Yemen for refueling on 12
October 2000, when a small craft pulled along side the ship and exploded,
killing 17 US Navy sailors. Attacking a US war ship is an act of war, but
we sent the FBI to investigate the crime and went back to sleep.

And of course you know the events of 11 September 2001. Most Americans
think this was the first attack against US soil or in America. How wrong
they are. America has been under a constant attack since 1979 and we chose
to hit the snooze alarm and roll over and go back to sleep.

In the news lately we have seen lots of finger pointing from every high
official in government over what they knew and what they didn't know. But
if you've read the papers and paid a little attention, I think you can see
exactly what they knew. You don't have to be in the FBI or CIA or on the
National Security Council to see the pattern that has been developing since
1979.

The President is right on when he says we are engaged in a war. I think we
have been in a war for the past 25 years and it will continue until we as a
people decide enough is enough. America needs to "Get out of Bed" and act
decisively now. America has been changed forever. We have to be ready to
pay the price and make the sacrifice to ensure our way of life continues.
We cannot afford to keep hitting the snooze button again and again and roll
over and go back to sleep.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Yamamoto said "... it seems all
we have done is awakened a sleeping giant." This is the message we need to
disseminate to terrorists around the world.

Support Our Troops and support President Bush for having the courage,
politically or militarily, to address what so many who preceded him didn't
have the backbone to do, both Democrat and Republican. This is not a
political thing to be hashed over in an election year this is an AMERICAN
thing. This is about our Freedom and the Freedom of our children in years
to come.

If you believe in this please forward it to as many people as you can,
especially to the young people and all those who dozed off in history class
and who seem so quick to protest such a necessary military action. If you
don't believe it, just delete it and go back to sleep.

HELECOPTERS OBSOLETE?

I understand that the US has stopped orders for the Comanche helecopters. It came after helecopter sorties in Iraq were diverted with consentraic machine gun and RPG fire in urban areas. This was a major blow to the concept of urban mechanized warfare and helecopter gunship support. The movie "BLACKHAWK DOWN" showed the fundamental flaw, yet we had expected to apply these tactics to conventional warfare. I think they canned the Comanche after realizing the tank hunting capacities of our current hele force were sufficent for the next forseeable 20 years against all modern opposition.

Do you have anything to add? Do you know more about this? Is this assessment correct? How else are hele-gunships utilized?

What would have happened if Hitler held off on confronting the Russians? Now what if Japan would have passed on attacking Pearl Harbor?

My guess is that Hitler could have focused on regrouping his forces and built up significant eastern defensive forces while focusing on toppling England. The US would have held off from activating it's massive industrial machine and it's involvment in the war for another two years. Also, if Hitler would have managed it's affairs with Italy better, the needed resources that were spent reinforcing southern europe could have been reallocated for northern defensive capabilities.

polygraph test

The dirty little secret behind the polygraph is that the "test" depends on trickery, not science. The person being "tested" is not supposed to know that while the polygraph operator declares that all questions must be answered truthfully, warning that the slightest hint of deception will be detected, he secretly assumes that denials in response to certain questions -- called "control" questions -- will be less than truthful. An example of a commonly used control question is, "Did you ever lie to get out of trouble?" The polygrapher steers the examinee into a denial by warning, for example, that anyone who would do so is the same kind of person who would commit the kind of behavior that is under investigation and then lie about it. But secretly, it is assumed that everyone has lied to get out of trouble.

The polygraph pens don't do a special dance when a person lies. The polygrapher scores the test by comparing physiological responses (breathing, blood pressure, heart, and perspiration rates) to these probable-lie control questions with reactions to relevant questions such as, "Did you ever commit an act of espionage against the United States?" (commonly asked in security screening). If the former reactions are greater, the examinee passes; if the latter are greater, he fails. If responses to both "control" and relevant questions are about the same, the result is deemed inconclusive.

The test also includes irrelevant questions such as, "Are the lights on in this room?" The polygrapher falsely explains that such questions provide a "baseline for truth," because the true answer is obvious. But in reality, they are not scored at all! They merely serve as buffers between pairs of relevant and "control" questions.

The simplistic methodology used in polygraph testing has no grounding in the scientific method: it is no more scientific than astrology or tarot cards. Government agencies value it because people who don't realize it's a fraud sometimes make damaging admissions. But as a result of reliance on this voodoo science, the truthful are often falsely branded as liars while the deceptive pass through.

Perversely, the "test" is inherently biased against the truthful, because the more honestly one answers the "control" questions, and as a consequence feels less stress when answering them, the more likely one is to fail. Conversely, liars can beat the test by covertly augmenting their physiological reactions to the "control" questions. This can be done, for example, by doing mental arithmetic, thinking exciting thoughts, altering one's breathing pattern, or simply biting the side of the tongue. Truthful persons can also use these techniques to protect themselves against the risk of a false positive outcome. Although polygraphers frequently claim they can detect such countermeasures, no polygrapher has ever demonstrated any ability to do so, and peer-reviewed research suggests that they can't.

Educate yourself. Before playing Russian roulette with your reputation, learn how to protect yourself against this invalid test. Download AntiPolygraph.org's free book:

CIA leak law comes full circle

Ex-agent finds irony in scandal enveloping Bush's White House

HAVANA · Philip Agee, the renegade former CIA agent best known for blowing the covers of more than 1,000 colleagues, takes a certain satisfaction in watching the political storm brewing over the White House.

Agee is the reason for the law that makes it a federal crime to reveal the identities of covert operatives. His best-selling 1975 memoir, Inside the Company: CIA Diary, and a subsequent radical magazine he helped launch exposed CIA agents around the world in an effort to thwart U.S. intelligence activities.

Former President George H.W. Bush, who became CIA director a year after Agee's book was published, was so incensed by his betrayal and the potential threat to agents in the field that he campaigned for the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, which passed in 1982.

Now the tides of history have turned. The law intended to silence Agee and would-be copycats is at the center of a thorny investigation hanging over George W. Bush's White House: what role senior aide Karl Rove played in leaking the identity of covert agent Valerie Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, an opponent of the Iraq war.

A special prosecutor was appointed in 2003 to determine whether White House officials violated the law and exposed Plame's name in a campaign to discredit Wilson after he wrote an opinion piece in The New York Times criticizing the Bush administration's decision to go to war.

"It is so ironic that the White House itself might be the first violator of this law, which my name is attached to," said the soft-spoken Agee, who at 70 looks more like a retired banker than a former man of mystery.

Actually, the little-known law has been used once before to prosecute a CIA clerk in Ghana who pleaded guilty to charges of revealing the identities of covert agents to her boyfriend.

Agee says he has not been following "Rovegate" closely and is a little surprised to see his name back in newspapers.

These days he divides his time between homes in Havana and Hamburg, Germany, where his wife works as a ballet teacher.

After an 11-year career with the CIA during which he worked to penetrate Cuban embassies in Ecuador and Uruguay, Agee has become an outspoken admirer of Fidel Castro's socialist revolution and is on friendly terms with some of the island's top officials.

His apartment building in the Vedado district is aging and disheveled like most of Havana. But inside, his home is an oasis of comfort above the city's gritty bustle. Graceful armoires, marble-topped tables and cozy couches rest on oriental rugs. Paintings and mementoes decorate the walls.

One room is devoted to www.cubalinda.com, the online travel agency Agee founded in 1999 to entice Americans to visit Cuba. The Web site offers package deals, fishing trips and tours to Ernest Hemingway's Havana hangouts. But despite initial interest, business is slow.

Due partly to the Bush administration's tightened restrictions on the U.S. travel embargo, Agee said he books only about 30 tourists a month, mostly non-Americans.

He is also at work on a book to "expose and denounce" alleged U.S. intervention against Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. For Agee, an icon of the left and pariah of the right, it is a return to the so-called "guerrilla journalism" that characterized his first book.

Agee's personal story with the CIA began in 1957 when he was recruited as a graduate student at the University of Florida. Hungry for a life of adventure and exotic travel, Agee, who says he was politically "naive" at the time, was posted in Ecuador and Uruguay to recruit Cuban intelligence officers into the CIA.

"I was involved in political repression because I worked with police and military in both Ecuador and Uruguay, having people arrested, some of them tortured," he said.

By 1968 he had grown so disillusioned with U.S. policies in Latin America that he quit the CIA.

"I began to realize that everything that I and my colleagues had been doing in the '50s and '60s in Latin America was a continuation of the horrors of the conquest and of the colonial period," he said. "The thought came into my mind, which until then was unthinkable, to possibly write a book describing how these activities are carried out as a way of helping people defend themselves."

Inside the Company: CIA Diary caused a furor when it was published. It described CIA activities in such detail that many accused Agee of researching the book while still in the CIA, a charge he denies.

When Richard Welch, the CIA station chief in Athens, was killed by a Greek terrorist group in 1975, Agee was blamed for his death even though he had not named him in his book.

In 1978 he helped found the Covert Action Information Bulletin, a quarterly magazine that also unmasked agents' identities. Reviled as a traitor, Agee's U.S. passport was revoked a year later and he was banned from five NATO countries.

In a 1991 speech, former President Bush said he would "never forgive Philip Agee and those like him who wantonly sacrificed the lives of intelligence officers."

Today, Agee says he has no regrets about publishing the names.

"Through all these years there have been accusations that it hurt people. But in actual fact I never knew of any case," he said. "The only case they could ever accuse me of was the Welch case, but that was totally false."

Agee seems somewhat indifferent to the outcome of the Rove-Plame case. Because the law is tightly written, he says, that he doubts Rove can be charged under it.

"I'm not really interested in the case other than the way it might affect the law," Agee said.

Has anyone read Sean Naylor's new book "Not a good day to die, the untold story of Operation Anaconda"? A pretty good read, I had no idea how close America was to screwing the pooch, thought Afghanistan was a cakewalk, to the contrary. Central Command denied the planners artillery, adequate air power, and no unity of command. All the special op's folks had to get into the act with no overall operational command. It was American ingenuity and tenacity that one the day, and a lot of luck....a good read, check it out!

John Boyd and OODA

I'm interested in strategy and have been reading about John Boyd's
OODA loop: basically it is the process Observe, Orientation, Decision, Action that everyone goes through in dealing with life.
Boyd's idea was that the side that could go through these more quickly, or do them more effectively, had the advantage. You may have heard heard newscasters or military commentators commenting that one person "got inside" the other person's loop. Responding faster creates disorientation and confusion (among other things) for the oppoenent. This concept was used during both Gulf Wars in U.S. planning.
It seems to work.
What do you think about OODA? How well do you think it works compared to other approaches? What strengths/weaknesses does it have?

US Navy's new top secret project

Navy's Top Secret Program

The US Navy and the secret weapons division of Electric Boat are working on what is called the SOPHIA Project (Stabilization Openwater Intra-Aquatic) that will enable 1/3-1/2 faster open sea travel to foreign destinations letting the ships "glide" across without changing the engineering or ships powerplants. The technology comes from basic pulse doppler technology and theory, and uses "reverse turbulence" and renders the immediate surrounding water flat. It is the equivalent of taking a blow dryer on high and pointing it into a tub of water.

A fleet can use these devices affixed to their ships in concert and they can move together to work most effectively. It can only be used in oceanic conditions that are mild. Time on target can be increased exponentially.
